Monster of the Week

Just because we live in a world governed by science and technology doesn’t mean there are no more monsters. They’re real, they’re dangerous, and they need to be stopped. In Monster of the Week you and your intrepid friends are the only thing keeping the horror from the rest of humanity!

In Monster of the Week, you take on the role of monster hunters, the brave few who seek out danger where others would run. The game uses Powered by the Apocalypse mechanics, which are focused on creating dramatic tension. You can take inspiration from your favorite fictional settings or build your own. If you’ve ever wanted to create your own horror adventures, Monster of the Week may be right for you.

Here’s how the publisher describes Monster of the Week:

Monster of the Week is a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties ala Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Winchester brothers of Supernatural, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully.

Three Things About Monster of the Week

  • Suitable for First-Time Gamemasters: The rules include materials to help guide gamemasters (known as Keepers in Monster of the Week) through creating a mystery, running the first session, and taking a campaign forward from there.
  • Built for Customization: Whether you want to emulate a book, TV show, or movie, you can tailor the game to suit your needs. Unsure of where to start? Get rolling with the Damn Dirty Apes mystery scenario included in the rulebook.
  • Powered by the Apocalypse: The game uses the core mechanics first introduced in Apocalypse World and used in a variety of popular games, from Dungeon World to Night Witches. Learn one and learning the rest is straightforward.

Notes for Gaming Beginners

This game is particularly well-suited to beginning gamers. It assumes no previous knowledge of roleplaying games and cleverly uses comics to explain the rules and show them in action. To get started, here’s what you’ll need:

  • The 320-page Monster of the Week rulebook
  • A pair of normal six-sided dice
  • Pencils & note paper (3×5 cards are also handy, but not required)
  • Three or four players
